Dealing with buckhorn sights on a Marlin 1894C

I took a Marlin 1894C out to the range yesterday, and found that the delineation on the buckhorn sights kinda sucked. I'm not adverse to scoping the thing, but I was wanting a rear sight that had somewhat more of a fine tune than the ramped staggering buckhorn sight supplied with the gun. Anyone have any ideas?

Practice with your 1894 till you are instinctive with it, buckhorn sights are for speed. Otherwise, get a Williams rear aperture like a Foolproof, they are fast and adjustable.

The .44 mag is about a 100yd proposition unless you handload 180gr bullets.

You might try a weaver or picatinny spec scope rail and a low power variable. As the Williams mounts on the side, you might be able to use QD scope mounts and have a dual sighting system. A red dot or holo sight might also be just what you're looking for, but I've not used them.

The 1894 is a super handy carbine with great potential. A Williams or Redfield type rear aperture will give you all sorts of potential which you can use if you handload.

What he said, just practice till you get used to it. The gun was not designed for precision shooting at long range anyway.

The 1894C is .38 special/.357 mag.

I have the same gun and think that it is a very versatile weapon and a great companion to a .357 revolver.

I hate those, and they put em on 30-30s too, which really sucks

Kentucky Windage, like said above, practice, practice, practice. Learn where your rifle hits and aim accordingly. Its called "Kentucky Windage".

Got a file or a dremel tool? Put more notches in the ramp or make a replacement out of flat stock. I also take off the "ears" on any of those stupid buckhorns that I come across. I like a flat plain across my rear sites with just a tiny half circular opening that fits the relative viewed size of the front bead.

I don't know if I'm gonna saw extra steps on the ramp, but that sounds like a good idea heh. I think what I need to do is just take all of your advice and put alot more rounds through it. I saw some peep sights that had finer tuning, but I think I just need to get used to this thing.

I shot my first bear with an 1894 in .44 mag. I had an unmagnified red dot scope mounted on it, but had tried several sighting systems previously. Everything was superior to the buckhorn sights it came with. Nothing made it hit anything consistently beyond 100 yards. Fortunately the bear was only 20 feet or so away when I introduced it to Mr .44.

The shot placement was excellent, but at that range I can hardly credit the sighting system, with one caveat. At extreme close range like that, anything magnified could have turned a very easy shot into a REAL mess.

I wish I still had that rifle.
